A Flicker In The Dark Book Review
The story is very addictive. With a confused narrator who is trying to find the truth, it will keep you guessing the whole time. It’s an amazing thriller debut novel. This follows Chloe Davis, who is trying to find the serial killer who she thinks is copying her father’s style of crime.
Chloe is trying to move on and is a psychologist who deals with people with trauma which sometimes reminds her of her past. Chloe is suffering mentally and taking drugs to calm herself down. Sometimes she thinks people won’t believe her and call her paranoid which leads to many faulty decisions.
She preparing for her wedding with Daniel. Her brother Cooper is also dealing with the past and he disliked Daniel from the first time they met. Cooper wants to stay close to Chole so he can protect her even though she doesn’t want him to do that.
Twenty years anniversary of the crime her father is coming up next month and she gets a call from a journalist who wants to interview her for the magazine about her traumatic past. Then the murder cases of young teenage girls strike back and it seems like it’s a work of a copycat killer trying to imitate her father’s crime pattern, who is in jail now.
The suspenseful story is filled with twists and turns. A lot of red herring will keep you guessing and doubting all the characters. It’s a slow pace in the beginning with a lot of details, mostly about how Chloe is and what’s going on in her mind.
I love guessing in this type of thriller suspense novel. Before I was halfway through the book I had my suspicion which turned out to be right. But the red herrings sometimes did make me doubt if I guessed it right or not and I loved that part.
A Flicker In The Dark is a gripping and well-written psychological thriller. Which will keep you on the edge and guessing. The revelations are timed well. All the characters seem real which is the great thing about the book. I’ll recommend this book to people who love to guess the ending.
Why You Should Read A Flicker In The Dark
Do you love to guess the ending? Then this book will be a very enjoyable read for you because of all the red herrings.
If you like to read stories that are detailed and well researched. The story is well written.
Do you love unreliable female narrator? This one’s narrator is a psychologist but she is also dealing with her trauma and self-medicates with illegally prescribed prescription pills.
My Final Thoughts
When I saw this book I saw the reactions of people were mostly positive. Sometimes too much positive response gives you high hopes and also makes you think “what if doesn’t turns out to be good?’. But I didn’t let those things bother me I just started reading this and it turns out to be a good and enjoyable read for me.
What I Didn’t Like
I like to read fast-paced books but this was a slow pace. The beginning was good then it started to go a little south which made it a bit boring for me then it gained its pace after half of the book.
The too much description of Chloe. Most of the time (first half of the book) it was just how she is and what Chloe thinks. It would have been good even without those too many details. The details were good but it was a bit too much which made it boring a few times.
What I Liked
The setting and characters seemed very much real. It was easy to understand and connect with them. Characters looking real is one of the important things for me otherwise it would be just a simple kids’ story.
I loved the way the author put all the red herrings. Guessing is one of my favorite thing about mystery suspense books. Even though I had my suspicions the book made me doubt them at many points.
